A silly thing ... [Dec. 31st, 2009|07:18 am]

seawasp

... I posted on Usenet, but I thought might amuse other people, from a discussion on sequels to other people's works like The Hobbit...

"Know, o Prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Numenor and its gleaming cities, and the rise of the civilizations of Men, there was an Age undreamed of, when kingdoms dark and light lay spread across the world like green grass across the hills -- Rhun and Haradwaith, storied Khand, Mirkwood with its green-shadowed elves and spider-haunted ever-shifting pathways, Rohan whose gold-haired riders rode like the wind over unending plains, Umbar of black sails and red-handed corsairs, Lothlorien, unchanging, where dwelt the Perilous Lady, Mordor of grey-black dust and fire, heart of uttermost darkness. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Gondor, reigning supreme from the seven-tiered fortress of Minas Tirith. Hither came Bilbo the Hobbit, brown-haired, mild-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a riddler, a Burglar, with gigantic appetite and diminuitive stature, to tread the jeweled thrones of the earth under his furry feet." -- the Bag-End Chronicles

Through some free association clicking while I was bored at work I ended up stumbling upon these:

Flickr user TwystNeko has been creating one interesting balloon creation per day. These two caught my eye but really, they're all pretty fantastic. If you're like me and dreading the final special maybe these will remind you that this is supposed to be fun. Happy New Year Whovians!

inquiring minds want to know [Dec. 30th, 2009|07:33 pm]

When Children of Earth aired my question was "What about the babies? They only showed school age children, did infants stop cooing in their cribs and freeze, start chanting "We. Are." etc? Or pre-verbal infants, were they suddenly able to speak these sounds or did they chant "Goo Goo Ga."? "

Obviously such vital important questions must be pondered. Even by those, like me, who didn't even watch CoE.

Which leads into my vitally important question about End of Time. Which I shall put under a cut to avoid spoiling anyone.Vitally important ponderances )

So, Blink was hands down the scariest thing I've ever seen in my life.

Even when reenacted with kittens, it's still scary.

If the stone angels were kittens )

I had a flashback to the night I watched that episode, and I screamed several times while watching this. *is a wimp.*

"The End of Time - Part One" - a rambling review [Dec. 29th, 2009|03:14 am]

I was one of those Who fans who actually liked "The Waters of Mars". In fact, I thought it was one of the better DW episodes and dealt with compelling themes of fate vs. free will and the responsibility of those with power onto those who do not. It was everything that I had hoped New Who would be; a mature sci-fi show. And the ending made for a great lead in to what is to be the 10th Doctor last two episodes. I was psyched.

Then The End of Time-Part One came... )

DWM poll inspired rewatch: Week 14b [Dec. 30th, 2009|09:46 pm]

We continue our first double feature week with Pyramids of Mars. At 88.97%, it achieves the number 7 position, making it the best considered story of the most liked season in this poll. It achieved this position largely due to the support of older fans, where those aged 18-35 placed it at #8 and 36+ placed it at #5. This compares with the story probably dwelling around #25-30 for veiwers under 18 and failing to enter the top 20 among newer fans. This is also the highest ranked classic episode to not break the 90% barrier (which in the 1996 poll was only reached by Genesis).

Here is an abridged version of what Marcus Hearn had to say:
Cut For Length )

And here is the Philip Hinchcliffe interview
Cut For Length )

But what do you think? Please post your reviews, comments and thoughts here. All are welcome

Apologies for the lateness of this posting. We continue the rewatch with the Brain of Morbius, which I will attempt to post on Sunday, though other may delay it once again.

Here.

SPOILERS for the End of Time part 2, though nothing too major.

It's also ever so slightly awesome, in my humble opinion.

ETA: Oh, and slightly extended audio here. And BW also has a non-mirrored version, since it doesn't have to worry about it being removed, I just realised.

I just had this really silly theory re: Wilf and the Doctor. cut for spoilers )

I'm usually wrong about these sorts of things, but it is a fun thought, isn't it?

The kids are home so it's been challenging to find time to do anything.

Cp has a Dr appointment today, and I need to shop. Still working on holiday insanity. But I wanted to think SLrose for the lovely rocking chair....

LOL And Ryk for the Saiyuki DVDs! :)
